Ethereum Doesn\'t Need Another Rollup Opinion: A Scalability Rethink
Everyone’s talking about rollups on Ethereum. They\'re touted as the ultimate scalability solution, but is adding another rollup truly the answer? In the quest to scale Ethereum, developers have been busily building mechanisms called “rollups” that operate more efficiently “on top” of the base chain. But what exactly are they and are we becoming overly reliant on this single approach?
Ethereum\'s (ETH) dominance as the foundational layer faces a nuanced challenge. While it focuses on making its underlying tech better and faster, other networks are exploring alternative scalability options. Is a Multi-Rollup Ecosystem the only viable path? Is the Ethereum\'s scalability solution potentially creating more problems than it solves? Here’s why we need to look beyond rollups.
The Problem with Rollup Over-Reliance
While Ethereum is instrumental in providing security and enabling rollups to focus more on execution to provide experiences not technical or feasible on the main chain, relying solely on them presents its own set of challenges. New app ideas face many tough questions and are scrutinized and challenged by the ‘ecosystem police’vocal members and influential figures within the Ethereum community, potentially stifling innovation that isn\'t perfectly suited for a rollup architecture. We need to foster a more diverse environment.
MEV Isn\'t a Rollup-Specific Issue
This is a fundamental issue with Ethereum in general and is called MEV (Maximally Extractable Value). You don\'t need rollups to run into this! While nodes are decentralized, MEV exists and can impact users regardless of the scaling solution employed. Simply adding more rollups doesn\'t address this underlying problem. We need proactive solutions for mitigating MEV.
A Look Beyond Rollups: Diversifying the Ethereum Scalability Landscape
Instead of endlessly adding rollups, we should explore and support:
- Alternative Layer-2 solutions.
- Optimizations at the base layer.
- Cross-chain interoperability solutions.
The Promise and Peril of a Multi-Rollup Ecosystem
The Ethereum ecosystem is shifting towards a multi-rollup future, where different rollups specialize in unique use cases. This approach ensures:
- Increased overall throughput.
- Specialized environments for different applications.
- Potential for cost optimization for specific use cases.
However, this vision of Multi-Rollup Ecosystem can create more fragmentation, where liquidity is fragmented across a number of blockchains. This complexity could make it even harder for new users to enter the world of Ethereum.
Opinion by: Adrian Brink, co-founder of Anoma, reinforces the notion that fresh thinking and diverse solutions are critical.
The Future of Ethereum: Balance and Innovation
As the ecosystem matures and more projects implement rollup solutions, users can look forward to lower transaction costs, faster processing times, and a more accessible Ethereum. However, Ethereum’s future success depends not only on its technology but also on the number of useful and fun apps people can actually use. We must ensure that a laser focus on more rollups doesn’t come at the expense of exploring other scalability options and fostering a more inclusive and innovative Ethereum ecosystem.
Everyone’s talking about based rollups on Ethereum. So what are they and how will they make Ethereum feel like Ethereum again?
