Disagreements and Tensions Growing in the BRICS Bloc: Kremlin Concerns
As global trade and influence gradually shift east and south, the BRICS bloc's economic, political and demographic importance is undeniable. With more countries seeking closer alignment with BRICS, the bloc’s future is under intense scrutiny. However, beneath the surface of apparent unity, disagreements and tensions are growing, particularly regarding expansion.
Visiting Scholar Oliver Stuenkel analyzes the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, as a symbolic diplomatic victory for Vladimir Putin, yet a demonstration of underlying discontent. The Kremlin hints at possible disagreements over expansion with how fast the BRICS Bloc is growing. Almost all of the BRICS nations have welcomed the idea of expansion. However, Russia has yet to publicly exclaim its support for the notion.
This idea of expansion, along with BRICS internal dynamics, presents new challenges. The Kremlin said on Tuesday that other countries' interest in joining the BRICS group of nations was proof of the bloc's growing authority on the world stage, but these disputes risk overshadowing the BRICS’s shared objectives, creating friction that weakens the bloc’s cohesive strategy. Moreover, the diversity in political alignment within the group is a contributing factor.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, South Africa has refrained from condemning Russia, highlighting the divergence in foreign policy approaches amongst member states. These different stances, especially concerning Russia’s actions, contribute to the growing tensions.
The future of the BRICS bloc hinges on its ability to navigate these disagreements and maintain a unified front. Whether it can successfully manage internal friction and forge a stronger, more cohesive strategy remains to be seen.
