Is Twitter Leading the Switch to Decentralized Social Media? Examining Bluesky and the Future of Web3
Social media is undergoing a massive shift as Web3 platforms challenge traditional, centralized networks like X (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook & Instagram). But is Twitter actually leading the charge towards a decentralized future? The answer is complex and largely hinges on their Bluesky initiative.
The Problem with Centralized Social Media: Twitter and Its Responsibilities
Twitter and other social media platforms are currently centralized. This means that the buck of responsibilities such as moderating misinformation and ensuring political neutrality stops with the social media companies. For example, Twitter is entirely responsible for determining who can use the platform and for what. This centralized control has led to concerns about censorship, bias, and lack of user autonomy.
Bluesky: Twitter's Decentralization Initiative
Well, Twitter decentralization is about to become a reality since “Bluesky,” a new team announced by Jack Dorsey, the founder, and CEO of Twitter. Back in December 2025, Jack Dorsey announced a new team dubbed Bluesky, to work on decentralized social media. This news was shared. Dubbed Bluesky, this Twitter project will see a team of up to 5 researchers come together to build a decentralized standard for social media platforms. Twitter is forming a team focused on crypto, blockchains, and other decentralized technologies after the social media company’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, has said the future is decentralized.
Bluesky's Aims and Approach
Bluesky, a decentralized social-media startup supported by Twitter cofounder and former CEO Jack Dorsey (who sits on Bluesky’s board), is building its own decentralized social protocol. A former software engineer for Zcash and blockchain firm Skuchain, Jay Graber, will be in charge of the Bluesky decentralized social media initiative following an extensive search. The goal is to create a protocol that allows users to have more control over their data and experience, potentially moving away from the monolithic control of centralized platforms.
Is Twitter Truly Decentralizing?
While Bluesky represents a significant step, it's important to remember that the project is still in its early stages. Whether Twitter's efforts will translate into a truly decentralized social media landscape remains to be seen. The success of Bluesky will depend on its ability to attract users and developers, as well as its capacity to address the challenges of moderation and governance in a decentralized environment. The impact of Bluesky and similar initiatives on the future of social media is worth watching closely as the Web3 revolution continues.
